People ask me all the time what actually happens between the day they sign off on a design and the day cabinets show up in their kitchen. So I want to walk you through an honest, ordinary day at my shop on Shiloh Rd — not a highlight reel, just what really happens when I’m building your cabinets.
A full custom kitchen takes roughly 6–10 weeks in my shop, and on any given day I’m handling four or five projects at different stages. Below is one real day, hour by hour.
6:45 AM — Coffee, Then the Cut List
I get to the shop before the phones start ringing. First thing every morning is the cut list for whatever job is on the bench that week. This week it’s a kitchen for a family in Newtown Square — 14 base cabinets, 9 uppers, a pantry tower. Before any wood gets touched, I re-check every dimension against site measurements we took ourselves. Old Chester County homes are rarely square, and a cabinet built to “on paper” dimensions won’t fit right.
Why does re-measuring matter so much in older homes?
Because walls in a 1920s West Chester farmhouse are commonly out of plumb by 1/4″ to 3/4″ over an 8-foot run — enough to open a visible wedge-shaped gap behind a run of uppers. I record three measurements per wall (floor line, counter height, ceiling line) plus corner diagonals, then scribe filler strips to match rather than caulking a gap shut. Stock cabinets can’t do that. That’s the entire reason custom exists.
8:00 AM — Material Selection Isn’t a Catalog Click
This is the part most homeowners never see. When an order calls for white oak, I’m not ordering a SKU — I’m going through the actual boards. I check four things: moisture content at 6–8% on a pin meter, matched to Pennsylvania indoor humidity; grain orientation (rift and quartersawn for door stiles and rails, because flatsawn cups across its width); color and figure matched from the same flitch across a door run; and defects — knots near joinery, checks, pith, and reaction wood get cut out or rejected. I reject roughly 1 in 8 boards that come through the door. That’s not efficient. It’s the only way cabinets I build last 30+ years instead of 10.

9:30 AM — Joinery: Where Cheap Cabinets and Real Cabinets Diverge
By mid-morning I’m at the table saw and router table cutting mortise-and-tenon joints for face frames and dovetails for drawer boxes — genuinely the difference between what I build and what comes out of a big-box cabinet warehouse. Stapled butt joints fail in humidity swings, and we get real ones here: July’s 80% to February’s 25%. A mortise-and-tenon joint moves with the wood instead of fighting it. It’s slower. It’s also why a VC Woodworks kitchen from 2008 still has doors that close true today.
How is custom joinery different from stock cabinet construction?
Custom joinery mechanically interlocks the parts; stock construction relies almost entirely on fasteners and adhesive. Here’s the practical comparison:

11:00 AM — A Client Walk-Through, Mid-Build
Twice a week clients come by mid-project to see their cabinets dry-fit, unfinished, honest wood. I want people to touch the actual grain and change their mind about a detail before finish goes on. Today’s visit was a couple from Devon reviewing their island panel — they wanted the walnut grain-matched across three door fronts before we committed to the cut. We adjusted the layout on the spot. That’s a decision you can’t make from a rendering.
What should you look at during a mid-build visit?
Look at the drawer box corners, the back panel, and the inside of a face frame — the three spots nobody photographs. Pull a drawer fully out and check whether the sides are solid wood with visible dovetails or wrapped particleboard with staples.
1:00 PM — Finishing Room
After lunch, finishing. I test stain samples on offcuts from the same board going into the cabinets — not a generic chip — because color reads differently on straight grain versus curl. A stained white oak kitchen might take three test samples before I’m satisfied the color reads right under the client’s actual kitchen lighting, which I’ve usually seen firsthand during the consult.
How many days does finishing take?
Budget 5–8 working days. A typical stained white oak job runs: sand to 180 grit, wood conditioner, stain, 24-hour cure, then two to three coats of conversion varnish or catalyzed lacquer with a light scuff-sand between coats. Doors are sprayed flat, both faces, so they don’t cup. I hold the finishing room between 65°F and 75°F — a cold room in February leaves a cloudy finish no buffing will fix.
I also watch what’s in the sheet goods. Cabinet-box plywood should comply with EPA TSCA Title VI formaldehyde limits — read the standard at epa.gov. If a supplier can’t tell you the compliance status of their panels, that tells you something.
3:00 PM — Design Consults for New Projects
Afternoons are usually reserved for new client consults — in the shop or on-site at the client’s home. I measure everything myself. I don’t send a subcontractor to take measurements for a job I’m going to build. What do you ask at a first consult?
Five things: how long you plan to stay in the house, who cooks and how often, the one thing that drives you crazy about your current kitchen, your realistic budget range including counters and install, and your timeline. A consult takes 60–90 minutes. Nobody signs anything that day. 5:00 PM — Install Prep
Before I close up, I check tomorrow’s install kit — hardware, shims, touch-up finish, the works. A rushed install undoes weeks of careful building. I’d rather run ten extra minutes checking a kit than have a crew show up on-site missing a box of soft-close hinges.
What’s actually in the install kit?
Soft-close hinges and undermount slides counted against the cut list, shims, scribe stock milled from the same species, a laser level, touch-up finish mixed from the job’s own formula, felt pads, and the hardware template. Install for an average kitchen runs 2–4 days: floors protected first, uppers before bases, everything leveled off the highest point of the floor — not off the wall.
Why I Still Do It This Way
I could speed this up. Pre-finished panels, pocket-screw joinery, and stock stain would cut build time by a third. I don’t, because the difference shows up in year 15, not day one — and I’ve been doing this in Chester County since 2005 because I want to build things that last that long. What moisture content should cabinet wood be at in Pennsylvania?
6–8% for interior cabinetry in this region, matched to average indoor conditions. Wood installed wetter than that will shrink through the first winter and open joints or crack painted finishes.
Do you build anything besides kitchens?

Should I order cabinets before or after countertops?
Cabinets first, always. Countertops are template-measured off installed cabinets, never off a drawing, because a 1/8″ difference in base cabinet height changes the whole template.
